Double Eclipse
Double Eclipse
“Hovering above the space like a protective god is a video projection of Rrap’s eyes mutating from a closed state through to an uncomfortable gaze of opaque white pupils. These dominant eyes give physicality to the idea of the mind and draw the cerebral and retinal into a holistic entity. Peering into another’s eyes has long been argued as being the path to one’s mind—that space of creativity. In this particular set of eyes is the entrance to Rrap’s mind. “
Vincent Alessi, catalogue Remaking the World: In Her Image 2015, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne, Australia
The video work Double Eclipse 2015 metaphorically represents both the all-seeing eye and the eye blinded. Just as in an eclipse of the sun the exposure of the eyes to this event can cause blindness thwarting our desire to experience the event. The human eye is only able to tolerate the reflected image of the eclipse in a mirror, which is a representation rather than a primary image. In Double Eclipse the trajectory of the animation creates a gaze that is both all-seeing and blinded through the suggestion of an eclipse cycle. Metaphorically this suggests the power of the gaze but also the blindness of desire.
